The Air Filter Was Loading Faster Than Expected
Construction equipment operating in a dusty Kenyan jobsite repeatedly developed high-load intake restriction even though the main air-filter element had not been in service for long.
Replacing the filter restored airflow temporarily, but restriction returned sooner than expected.
Rather than treating the filter element as the only problem, technicians inspected how separated dust was supposed to leave the air-cleaner housing.
The focus shifted to the dust evacuator valve.
A Filter Housing Must Manage Captured Dust
Some heavy-equipment air cleaners use pre-separation inside the housing.
Dust can be directed toward a collection area before reaching the main filter media.
The intended path is:
Dusty air enters → Heavier particles separate → Dust moves to housing bottom → Evacuator valve discharges material
If the evacuator valve remains closed or blocked, separated dust cannot leave.
The same contamination then remains inside the housing.
The Filter Became the Final Storage Location
With the dust outlet disabled, continued operation allowed more contamination to accumulate around the element.
This can cause:
- rapid filter loading;
- increased intake restriction;
- dust accumulation in the lower housing;
- and earlier restriction warnings.
The filter may still be functioning correctly—it is simply being exposed to more retained dust than the housing was designed to store.
The Inspection Followed the Contaminant Path
Technicians checked:
- rubber evacuator valve condition;
- hardened or split material;
- mud blockage;
- incorrect installation;
- dust cup condition;
- housing orientation;
- and whether the valve could open as designed.
Cleaning only the filter media would not restore the discharge function.
Why High Load Revealed the Issue
At low engine demand, a partially loaded filter may still provide enough airflow.
Under construction load, turbocharger air demand rises and the same element produces a larger pressure drop.
The machine can then show:
- black smoke;
- weak boost;
- reduced torque;
- and increased intake restriction.
These symptoms can be mistaken for injector over-fueling.
